Li's Shame, Part Deux
Tuesday, April 01, 2008 by scott

This is a follow-up to my previous tirade article, Li's Shame.

I came to the realization that the number of monitors isn't important, rather it's how many computers you have consuming power whilst idling away that counts!

And so now, with no ado, I present the following:

From left to right:

  • File server ( Win2k3 )

  •     Intel Pentium D 2.4 Ghz
        2 GB RAM
20 GB RAID 1 volume (OS)
1.2 TB RAID 5 volume (video)
        80 GB RAID 1 volume (docs/pics)

  • File / Monitoring server ( Win2k3 / Hyperic )

  •     Intel Pentium 4 2 Ghz
        2 GB RAM
20 GB RAID 1 volume (OS)
        200 GB RAID 1 volume (software/isos)
        80 GB RAID 1 volume (mp3)

  • Router / VPN Server ( IPCop Linux / OpenVPN )

  •     Intel Pentium III 667 Mhz
        512 MB RAM
        2 GB RAID 1 volume
        4 10/100 Mbps NICs (3 internal networks)

  • NetCap01 ( Ubuntu 7.10 )

  •     Intel Pentium III 550 Mhz
        384 MB RAM
        2 GB HDD
        3 10/100 Mbps NICs

  • NetCap02 ( Ubuntu 7.10 )

  •     Intel Pentium III 667 Mhz
        512 MB RAM
        10 GB HDD
        3 10/100 Mbps NICs

  • Mail Server ( Ubuntu 7.10 / Zimbra )

  •     Dual Intel Pentium III 1 Ghz
        2 GB RAM
        60 GB RAID 1 volume
(You can't really see them in the picture up there, but there is a 16-port 100 Mbps switch, an 8-port 1 Gbs switch, a cable modem, a Linksys RV042 router, and a 100 Mbps hub. Yes, a hub. There is a very specific reason why).

  • Web / DB Server ( Win2k3 / IIS6 / SQL2k )

  •     Dual Intel Pentium III 933 Mhz
        2 GB RAM
20 GB RAID 1 volume (OS)
        40 GB RAID 1 volume (web/logs)
40 GB RAID 1 volume (sql data)

  • VM Dev Server ( Ubuntu 7.10 )

  •     Intel Pentium 4 (HT) 2.8 Ghz
        4 GB RAM
        40 GB HDD (os)
650 GB RAID 0 volume (VM disks)
(In the above picture, the first 3 boxes are UPSes: 1000 VA, 800 VA, 1300 VA respectively).

  • Secondary Media Center ( WinXP MCE2k5 )

  •     Intel Pentium III 750 Mhz
        512 MB RAM
        20 GB HDD (os)
        250 GB HDD (video)

  • Web / DB Server ( Ubuntu 7.10 / Apache / Tomcat / Glassfish / MySQL )

  •     Dual Intel Pentium III 1 Ghz
        2 GB RAM
        320 GB RAID 1 volume

  • Secondary Gaming / Dev Workstation ( WinXP / Ubuntu 7.10 )

  •     Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz
        4 GB RAM
        40 GB HDD (WinXP)
        500 GB HDD (Ubuntu)
        Radeon X300 PCIe 128 MB
(I know the red case is a bit much, but I do like it).

  • Primary Gaming / Dev Workstation ( WinXP )

  •     Intel Pentium 4 3 Ghz
        4 GB RAM
        40 GB HDD (os/etc)
        40 GB HDD (programs/etc)
        GeForce 7600GT PCIe 512 MB
        GeForce 6200 PCI 128 MB
        8x DVD/CD Burner

  • Primary Laptop ( WinXP )

  •     Intel Pentium Core2 Duo 2.2 Ghz
        2 GB RAM
        120 GB HDD
        Verizon WWAN
        Intel Pro WLAN b/g/n
        Dell Bluetooth
        8x DVD/CD Burner
(The workstation is kinda buried under the ginormous CRT. And you can really only see half of the laptop, but there you go).

  • Primary Media Center ( WinXP MCE2k5 )

  •     Intel Pentium 4 (HT) 3 Ghz
        1 GB RAM
        40 GB HDD (os)
        500 GB HDD (video)
        GeForce 6200 PCI 128 MB
        Hauppauge PVR-500 MCE
        Creative Audigy Gold
(Observe closely.. You can click on the image to enlage, but the HTPC has the blue horizontal light below the phone and above the Wii. The thing it's sitting on is an old-school 6-disc CD changer).

  • Wife Laptop ( WinXP / To be comandeered somehow )

  •     Intel Core2 Duo 1.86 Ghz
        2 GB RAM
        250 GB HDD
        Intel Pro WLAN a/b/g
Bluetooth (with cool BT mouse, damn her)
        Fingerprint Reader
Integrated Webcam (like on a "precious" Crappentosh)

So there you have it. And I didn't even mention the other 2 laptops from my last post, because they are of poor spec. I have 3 other working laptops on shelves, so I really coulda whipped it out, but enough is enough, no?

    So we have:

    Servers Workstations
    Windows Linux Windows Linux
    3 (+2 VMs) 6 (+1 VM) 7 1 (+1 VM)
    9 (+3 VMs) 8 (+1 VM)
    17 (+4 VMs)

To avoid any nerd-arguments (I would never!), I counted the secondary dev / gaming machine as Linux, and the 2 laptops not pictured here as Windows workstations. The MCEs and laptops are categorized as workstations. There you have any counting-discrepencies.

End nerd communication. [Seriously flashing Spock-hand-sign at screen for effect].

  PS
Some totals I decided to add up:

Physical Storage: 5.866 TB
Usable Storage: 4.584 TB
RAM: 28.896 GB

I thought it would be more.. It's kinda disappointing that I could have the same specs in one box without too much difficulty. :(
